Apple’s Lesser Known Steve
All of us know Steve Jobs — the disruptive face of Apple who’s behind its greatest innovations. However, tech enthusiasts know that Steve Jobs didn’t work alone for the tech giant’s success. Apple’s groundbreaking creations were built by a several hands, including the other Steve — Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was behind Apple’s early innovations such as the original Macintosh, which was one the staple products of Apple that initiated its kickoff to success.
Wozniak, an entrepreneur and a seasoned tech innovator, also owns a portion of Apple’s stock up to this day. Despite that, he made startling assertions about the future of technology, and said that it will not come from the company he has founded. During his interview with Bloomberg Canada, Wozniak mentioned that breaking innovations will root from Tesla. He added, its CEO, Elon Musk will be the source of the next disruption in technology.
“I think Tesla is on the best direction right now. They’ve put an awful lot of effort into very risky things,” Wozniak said. “They started with a car—the Tesla Model S—that made little sense in engineering terms in how much you have to build for what price and what the market will be.”
Wozniak’s admiration for the work of Tesla and Musk clearly reflects his words – and it’s mainly because of the company’s right attitude. “I’m going to bet on Tesla,” Woz mentioned in the interview.
Breakthroughs from the Youth
Wozniak shared his observation regarding today’s prominent companies that are leading in the tech industry. Though back in the day, Jobs and Wozniak had undergone an unspoken conflict, it’s not why Woz is betting on Tesla. Mainly, it’s because he sees a part of Apple in Tesla.
“Look at the companies like Google and Facebook and Apple and Microsoft that changed the world—and Tesla included. They usually came from young people. They didn’t spring out of big businesses,” he said.
Like Apple, Tesla began with a product that Musk extremely liked. Tesla’s major product was a result of Musk’s passion. Similar to Apple, the company emerged from a project that Woz was built as a hobby.
“It was really built for Elon’s own life. What car would he like? And when things come from yourself, knowing what you’d like very much and being in control of it; that’s when you get the best products,” Wozniak explained.
After more than a decade, it’s quite apparent that Apple is on a sluggish move towards breaking innovations. The company seems to be suffering from a creative block. On the other hand, Tesla and Musk have reached a long way from their first electric car. This initiated arguments saying, both companies must merge to produce the next big thing in technology. Where resources of both companies combined; Apple’s money and Tesla’s innovation. However, Musk has already expressed his doubts about this proposal. Will he change his mind?
